What is the name of this movie?

Its a relatively old movie, but its in color. I'd say it was filmed in the early 90s. There is this guy in Alaska who has a dog and somehow the dog's leash gets attached to a bear cub and they travel around the wilderness together. I think the dog's name might be Niki.
