How do people have such deep rooted faith in their religions?

I've often wondered the same thing. I have never been able to suspend my intellect and powers of logic sufficiently to allow myself to believe that mythology and mysticism are reality. My opinion is, people desperately WANT to believe in this stuff because the natural world is a random and scary place, and death is a fact we cannot escape. This frightens people and they look for a way out through religion.
